Building Communities
Our Building Community driver is very much focused on ensuring our children develop a sense of pride in their locality and gain an understanding of its geographical and historical features. We also want them to know about local and national issues and where appropriate take an active part in working to solve them. As a school, we have engaged in British Council work with schools in Europe and historically with countries such as India, and Uganda, where we still retain strong ties and it forms a part of our rolling programme. It is through our partnership work that our children gain a better understanding of what it means to be a global citizen.
We have just welcomed schools from Portugal, Croatia, Italy and Turkey to Pilton Bluecoat to discover more about those countries and also engage with teachers from each school to enrich our offer. Nothing is more powerful than hearing, first hand, what Croatian citizens had to endure to gain their national independence. Reading something in a textbook is one way of gaining this knowledge, but to have someone speak about their personal experiences to us has enriched our understanding. We feel privileged to continue to work in partnership with these schools and feel more connected to the wider world through these meaningful relationships.
